Choreographer, performer and writer, the artist Sónia Baptista has been present with her work in several Portuguese and foreign theatres and festivals. Her language is multidisciplinary and mixes classical texts, philosophical texts, pop culture, gender issues or ecofeminism. She now visits and develops work at Serpa Secondary School.
BIOGRAPHY
Sónia Baptista is a choreographer, performer and writer. She has the Contemporary Dance Interpreters Course at Fórum Dança. She obtained, with distinction, the degree of Master Researcher in Choreography and Performance from the University of Roehampton in London, UK. Her training was complemented with several dance, music, theatre and video workshops. She attended the FCSH Art History course. As a performer and co-creator, she has collaborated with several artists and companies, including Patrícia Portela, Aldara Bizarro, Vera Mantero, Thomas Lehmann, Arco Renz, Ligia Soares, Sílvia Real. Her work has been present with her work in several Portuguese and foreign theatres and festivals. In 2001, she was awarded the Ribeiro da Fonte Prize for Revelation in the area of Dance by the Ministry of Culture for Haikus (her first work). Of her later creations, Icebox Fly stands out. Winter Kick (2003) Subwoofer(2006), Vice-Royale.Vain-Royale.Vile-Royale (2009), Peaufine (2011), Tempus Fugit (2012), Today is it a squirrel? (2013), in the fall the fox, and in the fall fox (2014). Settle on the Subida das Águas, (2016) Querer do Corpo, Peso (2017), Triste In English From Spanish (2017) I Call Her Will (2019) and Sozinhar (2019). In 2019, she creates two plays with finalists from the ESTAL and ESTC theater courses, Lobisomem- The Musical and O Fuck! Brexit, co-directs the opera TNSoMDN, co-creates Mise en Âbime and Could Be Worse. In 2020 she starts a project with CNB, Planeta Dança and debuts The Anger! The Fury! At the Alkantara Festival. In 2021, Desdormir a Desoras premiered at Serralves and in 2022 WOW at Culturgest and Re: at Teatro S. Luis. She writes dramaturgical texts for other creators and choreographers for film, video and theater, collaborating with Ricardo Neves-Neves, Teatro Cão Solteiro, Gus van Sant, among others. She has published eight books and countless essays, poems and writings in books, magazines and digital platforms. She collaborates with Fórum Dança, PED and FOR, with ESD, ESTC, ESTAL and Universidade do Minho, and with CNB in projects of pedagogy, creation, writing and reflection. Throughout her artistic career, her work was supported by the Ministry of Culture / DG Artes, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, GDA Foundation and National Culture Center.
