Alexandra Cabral

Artists at Schools Mértola

With a path that brings together fashion creation, design and research, Alexandra Cabral focuses on interdisciplinary fashion practices, as an art form and the artistic expression linked to costume. In the workshop she directs in Mértola (in São Sebastião Elementary and Secondary School), she develops links between fashion and the visual arts.

BIOGRAPHY

Alexandra Cabral (1978) has a PhD in Design (2019), with research in “Dynamic and Interactive Costume Design for Artistic Performance”, Master in Fashion Design (2010), with research in “Fashion and Contemporary Art: Processes , Pathways and Contamination in the Work of Joana Vasconcelos” and Graduated in Fashion Design from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, where she has been a guest lecturer since 2013. She is also an effective member of CIAUD, Research Center in Architecture, Urbanism and Design at same college. Her research interests include fashion as a creative industry and its transdisciplinary character, namely in the field of fashion and heritage, but her main focus is the interdisciplinary practices in fashion as an art form and the artistic expression linked to costume. She presents and publishes articles in the proceedings of scientific meetings, books and in academic journals, having also published fashion chronicles for Jornal i (2013). She was a Guest Assistant at ESTAL – Escola Superior de Tecnologias e Artes de Lisboa, ESART – Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco, Lecturer at Raffles Design Institute Shanghai (China) and Trainer at Modatex (Lisbon delegation), LSD – Lisbon School of Design, World Academy and ETIC – School of Innovation and Creation Technologies (Lisbon). She has multifaceted experience in the Fashion field since 2001, namely in design, styling, design management, creative direction, costume design. She was a mentor at Nau, a branding agency for the acculturation of fashion businesses in São Paulo. She was awarded the Young Creators Award (2003) in the Fashion category, with a collection integrated into the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum (Naples, Italy) in 2006. She participates in artistic projects and international contemporary art shows, combining fashion with the visual arts. She has forays into short films and music is still of interest to her. Having studied piano, musical training, choir and singing, her curriculum also includes live musical performances.
